The Universal Law of Dual Attachment

Buddha stated that attachment is the root of all suffering. Attachment is simply another word for dependency.

When a child is born, they cannot survive on their own. They are completely dependent on their caregiver for physical survival, and therefore naturally form a healthy, one-way attachment to that parent to stay alive.

When a parent possesses genuine self-love, this attachment remains a safe, one-way street. As the child grows, develops their own authentic sense of self-love, and sheds their dependency, this initial attachment naturally fades away. The child transitions cleanly into their own independence.

But when a parent has never formed a sense of self-love, they must rely entirely on the outside world to feel okay. Because they were never given a safe space by their own parents to develop an authentic self, their entire identity is built out of childhood survival habits. They live for the reflection.

The Engine of the Loop

The hidden trap that creates and maintains a dual-attachment loop is always a belief system built on fear. A belief is inherently rooted in doubt because it is an idea you hold to be true without being able to actually prove it.

When a person is never given a safe space to grow their own internal peace, their mind gets completely hijacked by this hidden doubt. To survive, they build an identity based entirely on rigid rules, external status, or the need to look perfect to the outside world. Because this entire identity is built on fear rather than real self-love, they become completely dependent on their environment to constantly tell them they are doing a good job.

The Direct Collision

When a person who was raised on performance-based praise in the absence of genuine love has a child, they are guided by a sense of fear more than love. This is typically the result of a fear-based belief system. All beliefs that can't be proven are based in fear, for a belief is a doubt, and the human mind views doubt as fear. These fear-based rules dictate how they treat the child. The parent is attached to a rigid script, while the innocent child arrives as a perfect, unclouded mirror, naturally attached to the raw truth of what they see and feel. The accurate reflection that the child naturally provides threatens the fragile foundation of the parent's world views. To protect the validity of an ideal the parent holds true but can't prove, the parent will exploit their position of absolute power to systematically warp the field, deploying tactical gaslighting, denial, or explosive rage to twist the child's capacity to perceive objective reality.

This distortion forces the developing child into an immediate, high-stakes binary choice of survival intelligence. The child can either accept the parent's inverted narrative, abandon their own sense of self, and acquire safety through strict emotional compliance—or they can fiercely resist, anchor themselves in what they actually feel, and protect the accuracy of their internal mirror at all costs.

This critical divergence in the child’s choice is the exact structural origin of the sibling split within a toxic ecosystem. The child who chooses the path of compliance and self-abandonment is instantly cast by the parent as the Golden Child. They are rewarded for validating the parent's script, transforming their internal generator into a hollowed-out, people-pleasing corporate sponge.

Conversely, the child who chooses the path of resistance and feeling is immediately branded as the Black Sheep Scapegoat. Because they refuse to swallow the distortion and instead choose to hold the uncompromised frequency of truth, the parent views their very existence as an adversarial threat. The system colludes to isolate, blame, and attempt to shatter the Scapegoat to protect the collective denial of the household.

This is the exact moment the dual-attachment loop is hardwired into the family architecture. Whether through the fake validation of the Golden Child or the aggressive persecution of the Scapegoat, the ungrounded parent forces the children to track external emotional static just to survive, laying the groundwork for a lifetime of systemic reality distortion.

C.L.I.T.

If you suffered from dual attachment with a caregiver, then you developed what I call C.L.I.T. — which doesn't mean someone is going to lick their finger and rub you with delight.

It stands for Core Love Instinctively Terminated.

Stevie Nicks perfectly addresses the exact mechanics of this survival choice in the opening lines of Landslide: "I took my love and I took it down."

The parent does not destroy your light. Instead, your own childhood survival instinct commands you to manually shut down and terminate your own self-love to accommodate the fragile reflection the ungrounded parent requires to feel okay. You bury your true frequency to perform a defensive script for an unstable system.

This dual-attachment circuit is what smashes the clear mirror, distorts your reality, and completes the cycle of the generational curse. Once you can see this clearly, you'll notice the same mechanism operating at every scale humanity organizes itself around — not just in a single home, but in every loop where one party depends on the other never looking too closely.

And just like the child you once were, never stop asking "but why."

The Adult Feedback Loop

This conditioning does not end when you leave the childhood home. It dictates how the ungrounded parent interacts with their adult children.

You may notice a bizarre dynamic: your parent will completely shut down your advice, insights, or recommendations, yet they will enthusiastically execute the exact same advice if a complete stranger on the street or an institutional expert suggests it. This is not an accident. It is pure mechanical conditioning operating within a dual-attachment loop:

• You Threaten the Identity: In the parent's ungrounded mind, they depend entirely on external validation to feel real. Because they remain trapped in a dual-attachment loop, they look at their adult child not as an independent source of wisdom, but as an extension of their own reflection. If they accept advice from you, their survival script interprets it as an admission that they are wrong and that the child has surpassed the caregiver. Their fragile identity cannot handle that reflection, so their nervous system instinctively snaps to protect its performance.

• The Stranger Bypasses the Loop: A complete stranger carries zero childhood history or emotional static. A neutral third party or an outside institution does not threaten the parent's old survival script or force them to look at their own failures as a parent. Their brain can receive information from an external source cleanly because there is no dual-attachment circuit to short-out.

Trying to force an ungrounded system to change is an energetic trap. You cannot fix a reflection by attacking the glass. True sovereignty requires you to drop your end of the attachment cord, stop trying to repair a system that is committed to its script, and focus 100% of your energy on grounding the generator on the inside.

A Note on Reclaiming the Ground

If you have unresolved feelings toward your mother and father, please know that is perfectly normal. I did too.

But then I sat with it, and I had to ask myself: what is worse? The fact that my parents didn't have the capacity to love me unconditionally, or the fact that they never had the capacity to love themselves?

When you realize they were operating out of a chaotic, unregulated internal state, the blame dissolves. We are all guided by the compass that we were given. You cannot truly develop self-love if you harbor any resentment toward your roots. Now that you understand the mechanics, you can actively develop the internal ground required to generate self-love from within. You still have time.

Use it positively. Do not harbor feelings of anger or hate. Staring at a distortion you cannot change only widens a neural pathway into a highway of stress through repetition. In the end, it will only hurt you.
